Levulan® Photodynamic Therapy for Sun Damage & Pre-Cancerous Lesions
Levulan® Photodynamic Therapy (Levulan PDT) is an advanced treatment for actinic keratoses (AKs), or rough-textured, dry, scaly patches on the skin that can lead to skin cancer. Levulan PDT, a 2-part treatment course, is unique because it uses a light activated drug therapy to destroy AKs. Levulan® Kerastick® Topical Solution is applied to the skin and the solution is then absorbed by the AK cells where it is converted to a chemical that makes the cells extremely sensitive to light. When the AK cells are exposed to Palomar® StarLux Intense Pulsed Light treatments, a reaction occurs which destroys the AK cells. This procedure, allows specific areas of the skin to be treated while causing little or no damage to the surrounding skin and requiring minimal downtime for the patient. In many cases, AKs can be treated by a single application of ALA-PDT.  Winter Park Laser is one of the few medical-spas in Orlando to treat Sun Damage and Actinic Keratoses with Photo-Dynamic Therapy.

Levulan® Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) for Cystic and Severe Acne combines Levulan® Kerastick® Topical Solution with the IPL LuxV™  technology to inactivate the bacteria that trigger acne, exfoliate the skin to unclog pores, and the most exciting mechanism is that levulan treatment shuts down the sebaceous glands that stimulate oil in the skin.  This is significant because the sebaceous glands are the root cause in the formation of acne so it has a long lasting effect even on severe acne. This treatment is relatively painless, although sensations like tingling, stinging and burning can be felt on the areas being treated. The down-time after the treatment consists of mild redness and swelling, with possible peeling.
