While they have been around since the Egyptian times and were the first non-invasive cosmetic treatment, chemical peels are making a resurgence again and have so many benefits. No matter what aggressive (laser resurfacing) or non-aggressive (IPl) laser treatments I always love to use chemical peels for combination therapy because nothing exfoliates or prepares the skin better than chemical peels.
What is a Chemical Peel? Chemical peels exfoliate and are used to remove the outermost layer of the skin to reveal the fresh, less-wrinkled layer below, the ultimate in skin rejuvenation and regeneration. Chemical exfoliation, a treatment you can receive at Winter Park Laser or most medical spas involves applying one or more acids to facial skin to remove the outermost layer. In general, chemical exfoliation involves the use of alpha hydroxy acids, which are naturally found in foods. The most common are glycolic acid that is derived from sugar cane, and lactic acid. These acids have a long track record of treating dry skin and hyperpigmentation (such as Melasma and other skin discolorations), and of reversing the effects of aging. Another frequently used substance is salicylic acid. Derived from the bark of the willow tree, it is an oil-grabber that helps unclog pores and effectively treat acne.
There are lite, medium and strong chemical peels but to get a deep, professional result you will want to go to a medical spa where under physician supervision the medical/para-medical aestheticians can use stronger chemical peels to go deeper giving you a better result for your money and time. A couple of great strong peels that are now safe for dark skin types include the VI chemical peel and the Melanage Peel.
Is A Chemical Peel For You? Chemical peels effectively improve the feel and appearance of the skin by reducing fine lines and wrinkles caused by sun exposure, aging, and genetics. They can also treat age spots, freckles, mild scarring, and other blemishes, including those caused by certain types of acne. If you are trying to brighten your skin, rid yourself of light wrinkles, or control acne, then the chemical peels could be a great option for you-always check with your medical spa and receive a free consultation. At Winter Park Laser we also include a complimentary Visia Skin Analysis to analyze your pore size, wrinkles, sun damage and texture so that we can suggest the most appropriate treatments for your skin.
